The `night of (broken) glass' 9-10 Nov 1938
when the Nazi Sturmabteilung (SA) militia in
Germany and Austria mounted a concerted
attack on Jews, their synagogues, and their
property. It followed the murder of a German
embassy official in Paris by a Polish-Jewish
youth. Subsequent measures included
legislation against Jews owning businesses.
This pogrom precipitated a rush by Jews for
visas to other countries, but restrictive
immigration policies throughout the world,
and Nazi restrictions at home, made it
impossible for most of them to leave.
