  2. when the Nazi Sturmabteilung (SA) militia in
  3. Germany and Austria mounted a concerted
  4. attack on Jews, their synagogues, and their
  5. property. It followed the murder of a German
  6. embassy official in Paris by a Polish-Jewish
  7. youth. Subsequent measures included
  8. legislation against Jews owning businesses.
  9. This pogrom precipitated a rush by Jews for
  10. visas to other countries, but restrictive
  11. immigration policies throughout the world,
  12. and Nazi restrictions at home, made it
  13. impossible for most of them to leave.
